AL-backed man wins Mongla poura polls

Shaikh Abdus Salam, an AL-backed candidate has been unofficially declared winner of the by-election to the post of Mongla Pourasava chairman held yesterday.

Salam bagged 9,086 votes defeating his nearest rival Talukdar Abdul Halim of BNP who polled 5,860 votes, and the two other candidates Kamrun Nahar Hye and her eldest son Jasimuddin.

The by-polls to the post of chairman that fell vacant following the death of Abdul Hye was held amid unprecedented tight security with two platoons of BDR, 28 armed policemen, 20 Ansars and a first class magistrate guarding each of the eleven polling centres.

Voter turnout was about 50 per cent of the total 32,369 registered voters, said the upazila nirbahi officer.
