IUT students win innovation award at UMCvEC 2026 in Malaysia
Five students from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) received the “Most Creative and Innovative Award” at the international engineering competition “Ecoggregate Bowl: Universiti Malaya Civil Engineering Competition (UMCvEC) 2026”, held at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur on May 16.
The team, named “Team IUT”, consisted of Rajit Muhammad Chowdhury, Ali Intisar Samin, Sadman Ahmed Sabub, Mohammad Shoaib, and Md Ragib Jawad Safat. Participants from several different countries took part in the competition.
The award-winning project featured a “Green Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC)” mix design developed using industrial waste materials and 100 percent recycled brick aggregates. According to the team, the design significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional construction practices while still maintaining a 600 mm slump flow through self-compacting concrete technology. Its performance was verified using the EcoConcrete Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Tool.
The project also presented structural durability exceeding 139 years, combining sustainability goals with long-term performance.
The team’s motto was “Build Stronger, Build Smarter, Build Greener.”
The project was supervised by Professor Dr Md Tarek Uddin of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at IUT.
