India committed to continuing humanitarian support to Myanmar

India today said that as a member of the UN Security Council, it is engaged on the issue of Myanmar and will remain committed to continuing its humanitarian support for the people of that country in mitigating the health and economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic.

"India and Myanmar are neighbours with close cultural and people-to-people ties, bolstered by trade, economic, security and defence-related exchanges," India's External Affairs Ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava told the virtual weekly media briefing, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

He said India is monitoring developments in Myanmar closely and "we are also engaged on the issue as a member of the UN Security Council."

Srivastava said India has extended assistance to Myanmar in the latter's fight against Covid-19 by providing medicines, test kits and vaccines.

"We remain committed to continuing our humanitarian support for the people in Myanmar in mitigating the health and economic impact of pandemic," the spokesman added.

On February 1, India had reacted to the military coup in Myanmar by saying it "noted the developments in Myanmar with deep concern" and that it "has always been steadfast in its support to the process of democratic transition" in that country.
