Ubisoft confirms Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake
Ubisoft has released the first piece of concept art for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, signalling the first official acknowledgement of a long-rumoured remake of 2013’s pirate-themed entry in the franchise.
The image appeared in a Ubisoft blog post outlining the series’ direction, alongside an update that post-launch support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows is being wound down. The company’s comments suggest its focus has shifted to upcoming projects, while the next fully new mainline instalment, currently known as Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe, remains some distance away.
In the blog post, Ubisoft leaned into the franchise’s history of secrecy and fan speculation, writing: ‘Speculation around Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it’s worth repeating: “Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.” Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon.’ The post concluded with a parrot emoji.
The remake’s official name was first reported late last year after it appeared in a listing from a European ratings board, fuelling renewed discussion of a project that has circulated in leaks and industry chatter for years. The rumours have been persistent enough to attract comment from the original game’s lead actor, while fan communities have regularly traded theories about timing and scope.
Although Ubisoft has not shared a release date, previous reporting has suggested Black Flag Resynced will be a substantial remake, with visual and gameplay changes intended to bring it closer to the production standards of recent series entries, including last year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Reports have also indicated that additional story material may be introduced to expand on the life of the game’s protagonist, Edward Kenway.
One of the most contentious reported changes concerns the modern-day segments that previously framed Black Flag’s historical storyline. Those sequences have been described as removed in the remake, a prospect that has drawn criticism from some long-time fans who see the modern narrative thread as central to the series’ overarching plot. If those sections do not return, it remains unclear how Ubisoft will address the original game’s ending, which connected events in its 18th-century narrative with developments in the present day.
The concept art release follows a period of shifting expectations around Ubisoft’s schedule. The publisher had previously indicated that an unannounced game was planned to release before the end of its current financial year on 31 March. In January, however, Ubisoft said that title had been delayed into the following financial year—running to 31 March 2027—as the company carried out a wider reshuffle across teams, projects and studios.
That revised window still leaves room for a launch later this year, as some industry watchers expect, but Ubisoft has not confirmed whether Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is the delayed title or when it will arrive. For now, the company’s clearest signal is the first official image and a carefully worded tease — a shift from years of silence on what has become one of the franchise’s most widely discussed unannounced projects.
