OpenAI launches free AI workspace for scientists
OpenAI has recently launched Prism, a free, AI-powered workspace designed for scientists to write and collaborate on research papers.
According to the official announcement, the tool integrates OpenAI's latest model, GPT-5.2, directly into a cloud-based writing environment built for the LaTeX document preparation system widely used in scientific publishing. Prism aims to reduce the time researchers spend switching between separate tools for drafting, managing citations and equations, and compiling documents, says OpenAI.
According to the company, Prism allows researchers to chat with the AI about their paper in context, search for relevant literature from sources like arXiv, convert diagrams into LaTeX code, and collaborate with an unlimited number of co-authors in real time. The platform is based on Crixet, a LaTeX platform that OpenAI previously acquired.
The service is available for free to anyone with a personal ChatGPT account. OpenAI stated that more advanced AI features will be offered later through paid ChatGPT plans for businesses, enterprises, and educational institutions.
The company framed the launch as part of a broader expectation that AI will significantly accelerate scientific discovery in 2026 by streamlining daily research workflows.
