How to transfer chats and information into Gemini from other chatbots

Tech & Startup Desk

Google has recently introduced new tools designed to make it easier for users to transfer conversations and personal data from rival artificial intelligence (AI) platforms into its chatbot, Gemini.

The company said the feature, referred to as “switching tools”, allows users to move stored information and chat histories from other chatbots.

Importing chat histories directly from other AI chatbots

Users can transfer entire chat histories by exporting them from other platforms and uploading them into Gemini as compressed (.zip) files. Many AI chatbot services, including ChatGPT and Claude, already allow users to download conversation logs in this format.

Once uploaded, the chats can be accessed and searched within Gemini, allowing users to continue previous discussions or revisit past interactions. However, only chat text will be exported. The photos and files generated in other AI chatbots will not be imported in Gemini, as per Google.

Transferring personal context and memories

The system enables users to transfer what Google describes as “memories”, including personal preferences, relationships, and contextual details that help shape how a chatbot responds. Rather than requiring users to manually re-enter such information, Gemini guides them through a process to extract relevant data from their existing chatbot.

Users are prompted to input specific instructions into another chatbot, which then generates a response containing personal information. That output can be copied and pasted into Gemini, allowing the system to build a profile based on previously shared data.

Google said this approach is intended to help Gemini quickly understand key aspects of a user’s background, such as interests or personal details, without requiring them to start from the beginning.

The AI chatbot market

The introduction of switching tools comes at a time when competition is growing among AI providers seeking to attract and retain users. In February 2026, OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, said its chatbot had reached more than 900 million weekly active users and 50 million consumer subscribers. Meanwhile, Google said Gemini had surpassed over 750 million monthly active users in its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2025 results.
