Google Maps is getting Gemini upgrade
Maps is set to receive artificial intelligence (AI) upgrades with the integration of Gemini, Google's AI assistant.
According to a recent blog by Google, the new Gemini-powered experience will function like "a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat," allowing drivers to issue natural voice commands for a wide range of tasks. Users will be able to find restaurants along their route, check for electric vehicle charging stations, and share their estimated time of arrival without even taking their hands off the wheel.
With user permission, Gemini can integrate with Google Calendar to automatically schedule events. It can also answer follow-up questions about popular dishes or recent news, enabling a more fluid and personalised experience, as per the company.
Google Maps will further expand its real-world awareness by using landmarks to guide drivers. Instead of the traditional "turn right in 500 feet," the app will give more intuitive instructions like "turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant," using data drawn from 250 million mapped locations and Street View imagery.
In addition, Gemini will simplify real-time reporting, allowing drivers to use voice commands such as "I see an accident" or "There's flooding ahead" to alert others about disruptions. The company also plans to introduce proactive traffic notifications that warn users of closures or congestion, even when they are not actively navigating.
The new features will be rolled out in stages over the coming weeks. Landmark-based navigation is launching in the United States on Android and iOS, while proactive traffic alerts and the hands-free Gemini experience will follow globally wherever Gemini is available.
