Sunamganj transport strike called off after 24 hours

Sunamganj district transport workers' union withdrew its transport strike this evening after 24 hours causing inconvenience to tens of thousands of commuters.

They called the strike demanding a new bus terminal and an end to alleged harassment by police, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

"We called off the strike after the district administration in a meeting this afternoon assured us to extend the Sunamganj Bus Terminal," said Shejaul Kabir, president of the Sunamganj District Transport Workers Association.

The strike was called in last evening soon after police seized three buses parked on the road and allegedly misbehaved with the bus drivers. Transport workers said they were forced to park on the roads as there was not enough space in the terminal.

"The administration and police realized the problem and assured of no further harassment," Shejaul Kabir added.

During the transport strike, there were no bus services in and out of the district, causing immense suffering for commuters.

Moreover, the transport workers have also seen picketing on the Sunamganj-Sylhet highway hindering the movement of private vehicles.
