We have integrated Bangla QR into its digital wallet BanglaPay. Customers can make QR payments using their wallet, bank account or payment card through a single platform.

Bangla QR is helping simplify digital payments across Bangladesh by replacing fragmented systems with a unified, interoperable standard. This transition not only eases daily transactions for customers but also helps formalise small businesses through digital records. In this interview, S. M. Mainul Kabir, Managing Director & CEO of SBAC Bank PLC, discusses consumer adoption strategies, payment security, and how the bank is advancing this initiative through its digital wallet, BanglaPay.

The Daily Star (TDS): How do you perceive the role of Bangla QR in driving Bangladesh’s transition toward a truly cashless society?

S. M. Mainul Kabir (SMMK): Bangla QR is a milestone in Bangladesh’s digital payments journey. By replacing fragmented QR systems with a unified standard, it enables interoperability among banks, MFS providers and payment platforms. This simplifies payments, expands financial inclusion and strengthens the foundation for a cash-lite economy.

TDS: How are Banks, MFS providers, and fintech companies collaborating to ensure seamless, cross-platform transactions?

SMMK: The ecosystem is built on Bangladesh Bank’s common technical standards. All participating institutions are integrating their systems under the same framework, allowing customers to Scan a single QR code and pay using accounts from different banks or wallets. This collaborative approach ensures convenience, wider merchant acceptance and a seamless customer experience.

TDS:  What strategies are being deployed to simplify merchant onboarding, and how does Bangla QR help formalise businesses?

SMMK: Merchant onboarding must be simple, affordable and fast. SBAC Bank is ready to begin onboarding merchants under the Bangla QR framework. Digital transactions create financial records that improve transparency and can help small businesses gain access to formal banking services and future financing while reducing cash-handling risks.

TDS: What steps are required to shift consumer behaviour away from cash?

SMMK: Technology alone cannot create a cashless society. Customers need secure, user-friendly applications, low-cost transactions and reliable services. Financial awareness is equally important. As digital payments become easier for everyday purchases at grocery stores, pharmacies and restaurants, Bangla QR will naturally become part of daily life.

TDS: What security mechanisms are integrated to protect users?

SMMK: Customer trust is fundamental. At SBAC Bank, we use multi-factor authentication, real-time transaction monitoring, encrypted data transmission, device verification and advanced fraud detection. Regular security audits and customer awareness are equally important. We continuously advise customers never to share their OTP, PIN or passwords.
