Consumers should avoid scanning QR codes received from unknown sources or those attached to unsolicited promotional messages. Suspicious-looking stickers, damaged labels or QR codes that appear to have been pasted over another code should also be treated with caution.

The launch of Bangla QR marks a major milestone in Bangladesh’s journey towards a digital economy. Developed as a unified QR payment standard, the system enables customers to make payments through banks, mobile financial services and payment service providers using a single QR code. For merchants, it eliminates the need to display multiple payment codes. For consumers, it promises faster and more convenient transactions.

The widespread adoption of digital payments across various businesses has positioned QR codes as a primary driver in the transition toward a cashless economy. However, this rapid technological integration also introduces new security vulnerabilities. While QR codes offer undeniable convenience, their growing popularity has also made them an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals.

Why QR payments are growing

Bangladesh has witnessed remarkable growth in digital financial services over the past decade. Millions of people now use mobile wallets and online banking for everyday transactions. A unified QR payment system removes compatibility barriers between different providers, making digital payments more accessible for both businesses and consumers.

For small merchants in particular, Bangla QR reduces operational complexity. Instead of maintaining several QR codes for different payment platforms, a single code can serve customers regardless of which participating banking or financial service application they use. This convenience is expected to encourage greater adoption among businesses that have been hesitant to embrace digital payments.

The simplicity of scanning a code and completing a transaction within seconds also makes QR payments appealing to consumers, especially younger users who increasingly rely on smartphones for financial services.

The hidden risks behind a simple scan

Despite their simplicity, QR codes present a unique cybersecurity challenge.
