Laboni Akhter: A different kind of farming

Laboni Akhter, 29, an entrepreneur from Shariatpur, began farming laboratory mice in 2024 with just Tk 2,500.

With a postgraduate degree in zoology, she bought four Swiss Albino mice and two cages and began breeding them for research laboratories. Many were surprised and questioned her choice, but she continued.

Her customers now include laboratories, universities, pharmaceutical companies, suppliers and other breeders who use the mice for research and related purposes.

Without formal training, Laboni learned how to rear, care for and breed the mice through online research.

The business now provides her with a regular income, and she plans to expand the farm. She believes laboratory mouse farming remains largely unexplored in Bangladesh and that proper training, research support and stronger connections between breeders and buyers could help develop the sector.

For Laboni, no work is insignificant, and any work pursued with passion can lead to success.
