Zimbabwe seal maiden Super Eight berth; Aussies eliminated
Zimbabwe became the latest team to advance to the Super Eight after their match against Ireland in Kandy was washed out on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe became the second team from Group B to go through, which means Australia are now out of contention for the next stage. After splitting points with Ireland today, Zimbabwe have five points from three matches, while Australia have only two and will not be able to catch up to Sikandar Raza's team even if they win the final group game against Oman on Friday.
This is the first time that Zimbabwe have advanced to Super Eight or the second stage of T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, this is only the second time Australia, champions of the 2021 edition, have exited from the group stage of the tournament. They were eliminated from the same stage in 2009.
