Records galore for Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo answered his critics in the most emphatic fashion yesterday, scoring twice in Portugal's 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan and setting remarkable milestones in the process.

Ronaldo has spent much of his career responding to criticism with goals, and Tuesday night in Houston was no different.

After an underwhelming performance in Portugal's 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their World Cup opener, questions had begun to emerge over whether the 41-year-old still deserved a place in Roberto Martinez's starting eleven. Ronaldo, however, delivered his response where it mattered most.

The Portugal captain scored twice in a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their Group K clash, helping his side move to the brink of the knockout stage while adding yet another chapter to his extraordinary career.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, meeting a pinpoint cross from Joao Cancelo with a clinical first-time finish. He struck again in the 39th minute, racing onto a through ball from Bruno Fernandes before calmly slotting past the advancing goalkeeper.

The veteran forward could even have completed a hattrick on another memorable night, but his brace was more than enough to leave his mark on the record books.

** With his first goal, Ronaldo became the first player in history to score in six different World Cup editions (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026), extending a streak that began in Germany two decades ago. His long-time rival Lionel Messi has scored in five World Cups.

** Having scored against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo has now netted in 11 major tournaments across the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup, further extending a record he already held.

** At 41 years and 138 days, Ronaldo became the second-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history, behind only Cameroonian legend Roger Milla. He also set a new mark as the oldest player ever to score twice in a World Cup match, surpassing the record Messi (39 years, 363 days) had set only a day earlier against Austria.

** His second goal of the night carried further significance as it took him to 10 World Cup goals for Portugal, moving him past the great Eusebio's tally of nine and making him the country's outright leading scorer in the tournament.

** Ronaldo also joined an exclusive club by becoming only the third player from a nation with multiple World Cup scorers to be both his country's youngest and oldest goalscorer in the competition's history. The record previously belonged to Denmark’s Michael Laudrup and Argentina’s Messi. Ronaldo’s first World Cup goal came when he scored against Iran in 2006, when he was 21 years and 132 days old.

For a player whose future was being debated only days ago, it was the perfect reminder that Ronaldo remains capable of producing moments that few others can.
