Star Sports Desk

The countdown is almost over. The 2026 Football World Cup is knocking at the door. Jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, this edition is not only expanding in scale but is set to write several brand-new chapters in football history.

With a revamped format and an increased number of participating teams, the tournament is shaping up to be an unprecedented mega-spectacle.

Let’s take a comprehensive look at the upcoming World Cup through the lens of numbers and statistics:

0

Not a single footballer from Cape Verde, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Curaçao, Senegal or Uruguay plays in their respective domestic league. Their entire squads have been built using overseas-based players. This stands in stark contrast to Qatar and Saudi Arabia, where 25 out of their 26 players ply their trade in their home leagues.

1

For the first time in history, the World Cup will feature three host nations -- the United States, Mexico and Canada. A three-nation joint-hosting of the World Cup has never occurred before.

3

The historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City is set to achieve the unique distinction of becoming the first venue to host matches across three different World Cups. Following the 1970 and 1986 editions, the curtain will rise on this year's tournament at this iconic stadium.

Meanwhile, France have the chance to become only the third team to reach three consecutive World Cup finals. Les Bleus were champions in 2018 and runners-up in 2022. Previously, only West Germany (1982, 1986, 1990) and Brazil (1994, 1998, 2002) have achieved the feat of playing in three consecutive finals.

4

Four new nations are making their debut on the world stage this year. The debutants are Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan. Their inclusion brings the total number of nations to have ever participated in the World Cup to 84.

6

Argentinian magician Lionel Messi and Portuguese megastar Cristiano Ronaldo are set to create history by appearing in their sixth World Cup. Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has also earned a place in a World Cup squad for the sixth time, though he did not get the opportunity to play a single match in the 2006 and 2010 editions.

7

Egypt have played seven matches in the World Cup so far without ever tasting victory. Holding a record of five defeats and two draws, they will take to the pitch against Belgium on 16 June in a quest to break this drought. The record for playing the most World Cup matches without a win belongs to Honduras (nine matches), but they failed to qualify for this edition.

16

A total of 16 North American cities will bear witness to the World Cup this time. However, as the primary hosts, the United States will stage the majority of the matches. In total, the games will be spread across 11 venues in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada.

Among club football sides, Manchester City of the English Premier League boast the highest representation at this World Cup with 19 players. They are followed by Bayern Munich (18), PSG (16), Arsenal (16) and Barcelona (15).
