The FIFA World Cup knockout bracket began to take shape on Day 15 as Ecuador pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament so far by beating already-qualified Germany to book a place in the Round of 32.

Elsewhere, the Netherlands sealed top spot in Group F, Japan advanced and set up a clash with Brazil, Ivory Coast reached the knockout stage for the first time, while Australia secured runners-up spot in Group D. Sweden and Paraguay also stayed alive as two of the best third-placed teams.

Ecuador complete stunning escape

Ecuador produced the headline result of the day, coming from behind to defeat Group E winners Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium and squeeze into the Round of 32 as one of the tournament's eight best third-placed teams.

Germany struck inside two minutes through Leroy Sane in a controversial opening goal, but Ecuador responded through Nilson Angulo before Gonzalo Plata bundled home the winner 13 minutes from time.

The victory lifted Ecuador to four points, enough to extend their World Cup journey despite finishing behind Germany and Ivory Coast in the group standings.

Germany, meanwhile, had already secured top spot after victories over Ivory Coast and Curacao, leaving Julian Nagelsmann frustrated with his side's display despite having nothing riding on the result.

Ivory Coast make history

Ivory Coast ensured there would be no late drama in the race for second place in Group E, defeating Curacao 2-0 in Philadelphia.

Nicolas Pepe struck twice to send the West Africans into the knockout rounds for the first time in their history as Group E runners-up.

Curacao, appearing in their maiden World Cup, exited the competition with a solitary point at the foot of the table.

Dutch finish on top, Japan book Brazil showdown

The Netherlands confirmed themselves as Group F winners with a convincing 3-1 victory over Tunisia in Kansas City.

An Ellyes Skhiri own goal handed the Dutch an early advantage before Brian Brobbey and Jan Paul van Hecke completed another impressive attacking display. Tunisia bowed out without a point from three matches.

The victory set up a Round of 32 clash with Morocco, who reached the semifinals at the 2022 World Cup.

Japan, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 draw by Sweden in Texas, denying them the chance to overtake the Dutch and avoid a meeting with Brazil.

Daizen Maeda put Japan ahead shortly after the break before Anthony Elanga's long-range strike rescued a point for Sweden.

Japan advanced as Group F runners-up and will now face Group C winners Brazil in the Round of 32, while Sweden progressed as one of the best third-placed teams.

Australia through despite stalemate

Australia booked their place in the Round of 32 after grinding out a goalless draw against Paraguay in Santa Clara.

The point was enough to secure second place behind group winners the United States.

Paraguay also remained on course for the knockout stage, with their points tally sufficient to send them through as one of the best third-placed teams.

Turkey end on a high against rotated USA

Already-qualified United States suffered their first defeat of the tournament, losing 3-2 to Turkey after coach Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes to his starting XI.

Having already wrapped up top spot in Group D with wins over Paraguay and Australia, the Americans rotated heavily and were punished when Kaan Ayhan struck in stoppage time to hand Turkey a consolation victory.

Despite the defeat, the USA finished atop the group and will head into the Round of 32 as group winners, while Turkey's campaign ended despite signing off with a memorable win.
