Hamza set for Sheffield Utd return

Bangladesh star midfielder Hamza Choudhury is closing in on a permanent move to Championship side Sheffield United, according to English media reports on Sunday.

Hamza currently plays for Leicester City, who were relegated to League One -- the third division of English football. The 28-year-old was reportedly on his way to Derby County, also in the Championship, before Sheffield United seemingly hijacked the deal to bring the midfielder to Bramall Lane on a free transfer for a second stint.

Hamza previously spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Sheffield United, helping the Blades reach the Championship playoff final.

Sheffield United moved for Hamza following an injury to right-back Femi Seriki. The midfielder played in the same position during his loan spell at the club. Hamza is now undergoing a medical and will then finalise the paperwork on his contract, according to reports.

If everything goes smoothly, Hamza could be available for Tuesday night’s match against Bolton, which kicks off just a few hours before the transfer deadline expires.

It has been a downward spiral for 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City, who have dropped into League One after successive relegations and have been keen to offload Hamza’s wages.

The move would bring an end to Hamza’s more than decade-long journey at the King Power Stadium. He joined Leicester City’s youth setup in 2014 and went on to win the FA Cup in 2021, the FA Community Shield -- also known as the English Super Cup -- in 2021, and the EFL Championship title in the 2023-24 season.
