Dorielton on target as Kings reclaim solo lead

Star Sports Report

Dorielton Gomes scored his 14th goal of the campaign as Bashundhara Kings re-established a three-point lead at the top of the Bangladesh Football League with a 1-0 win over Brothers Union at the Kings Arena on Saturday.

The Brazilian striker smashed home from inside the box after Saad Uddin’s cross, capitalising on a costly error by Yeasin Arafat, who lost possession in front of the area despite being under no pressure.

The league leaders dominated proceedings but failed to add to their tally, while Brothers offered little attacking threat. Pakistani forward Shayak Dost was kept quiet, failing to score for the first time in his fifth BFL appearance.

The win took Kings to 31 points from 14 matches, three ahead of second-placed Abahani, while Brothers remained seventh with 13 points.

Meanwhile, defending champions Mohammedan  eased their relegation concerns with a 3-1 victory over PWD -- their second win in as many matches since the departure of head coach Alfaz Ahmed -- at Shaheed Barkat Stadium in Gazipur.

Jewel Mia gave Mohammedan the lead with a header in the 15th minute, but Mohammed Abdullah equalised in the 85th minute, seemingly setting up a draw.

However, a late surge turned the game on its head. A clumsy foul on Muzaffarov inside the box earned Mohammedan a penalty, which the Uzbek midfielder converted calmly. Rafayel Tudu then sealed the win with a brilliant solo goal.

The victory lifted the Black and Whites to sixth place with 17 points.

In another match, Bangladesh Police FC secured a 3-1 win over Young Men’s Fakirerpool at Shaheed Miraj-Topon Stadium in Manikganj. Paulo Henrique scored twice, while Shafik Kagimu added the third. Mohammad Shadhin netted the lone goal for the bottom-placed Fakirerpool.

Police climbed to fourth in the table with 19 points following the win.
