City Club secure BFL promotion after Wanderers slip

Star Sports Report

City Club have secured promotion to the top-tier Bangladesh Football League despite suffering a defeat, after Dhaka Wanderers Club went down 2-1 to Shuktara Jubo Sangsad at the Bashundhara Kings Arena practice ground on Monday.

City Club had the chance to seal qualification with a win against BRTC Club in their 16th match. However, they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Shaheed Barkat Stadium in Gazipur. Their fate, though, was decided elsewhere as Wanderers’ loss confirmed City Club’s maiden promotion to the top flight.

With 30 points from 16 matches and two games remaining, City Club are now seven points clear of third-placed Wanderers, who have 23. Even if Wanderers win both of their remaining matches, they will not be able to catch City Club.

Meanwhile, the result also confirmed the title for Chittagong City FC, who have clinched the secon-tier title crown with two matches to spare. The port city outfit sit comfortably at the top of the table with 39 points from 16 matches following their 1-0 win over Wari Club.
