Cavan Sullivan earns first USMNT call-up
Cavan Sullivan has received his first United States senior call-up, with the 16-year-old included in Mauricio Pochettino's squad for the September-October international window.
Sullivan is one of 13 players who could make their USMNT debuts during the four-match friendly programme. Should he take the field, he would become the fourth-youngest player to represent the United States.
The Philadelphia Union teenager has been in outstanding form since the MLS season resumed, adding to the hype around a player already regarded as one of the brightest prospects in American football.
Sullivan also has a strong Bangladeshi connection. His maternal grandmother, Sultana Alam, hailed from Dhaka, while his older twin brothers Ronan and Declan have represented Bangladesh at U-20 level.
The call-up represents another landmark in a rapid rise for Sullivan, who made his professional debut for Philadelphia Union at 14. He turns 17 on September 28. He is all set to join Manchester City when he turns 18.
Pochettino has used the new international window to introduce a wave of young talent, with several established names left out. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Folarin Balogun are among those missing, while other newcomers include Zavier Gozo, Peyton Miller, Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti.
Sullivan will share his first senior camp with Union teammates Neil Pierre and Frankie Westfield, who have also received maiden call-ups.
The United States' four friendlies during the window are against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada.
