Three innings defeats in four days: Another Bangladesh side outplayed

After the Bangladesh national and ‘A’ teams suffered crushing defeats earlier this week, the Emerging team also endured a similar fate on Wednesday, conceding an innings-and-16-run defeat to South Africa Emerging team in the second and final four-day match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni.

Bangladesh’s national team suffered an innings-and-51-run defeat to Australia in the second Test in Mackay on Sunday, with the match ending in just two days. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh ‘A’ team suffered an innings-and-413-run defeat to South Africa ‘A’ in the opening four-day game in Pretoria on Tuesday, also within three days.

The Emerging team, however, put up a relatively better fight, taking the match into the fourth and final day. But the outcome appeared almost certain after the third day, when Bangladesh finished on 94 for three in their second innings while following on.

Resuming from that position on the final day, Bangladesh batted for 39 overs before being bowled out for 210, suffering an innings defeat and losing the two-match series 1-0. The opening four-day match at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom had ended in a draw last week.

Captain Iftakhar Hossain Ifti, who top-scored with 70 in the first innings, again led Bangladesh’s batting in the second innings with 59 off 153 balls. Md Abdullah contributed 44, but their efforts were not enough to prevent an innings defeat.

South Africa Emerging off-spinner Schalk Engelbrecht was the chief destroyer on the final day, finishing with five wickets for 68 runs from 23 overs as the hosts wrapped up a series victory.

Earlier, South Africa Emerging had declared their first innings at 497 for eight before bowling Bangladesh out for 271.
