Bangladesh suffer late collapse in U-19 WC loss to India
Bangladesh suffered a dramatic batting collapse, losing eight wickets for 40 runs, to go down by 18 runs (DLS method) against India in their opening match of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bulawayo on Saturday.
Set a revised target of 165 in 29 overs after rain interrupted play, Bangladesh were 90 for two in 17.2 overs before the collapse. They eventually managed only 146 all out in 28.3 overs, falling short despite needing 75 runs from 70 balls at one stage.
Captain Azizul Hakim Tamim top-scored with 51 and added 68 runs for the second wicket with Rifat Beg, who made 37, giving Bangladesh a solid platform. However, the innings unraveled after the rain break as off-spinner Vihaan Malhotra ripped through the middle and lower order, finishing with four for 14. There was little resistance from the remaining batters.
Earlier, India posted 238 in 48.4 overs, built around Abhigyan Kundu’s 80 and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 72. Pacer Al Fahad was the standout performer for Bangladesh with the ball, claiming five wickets.
Bangladesh will play their next Group B match against New Zealand on January 20.
