3 wickets for 0 runs: Bangladesh force Australia into an embarrassing ODI first
Bangladesh made Australia enter the record books for the wrong reasons on Thursday morning in Mirpur, as they lost three frontline batters without scoring a run for the first time in ODIs.
In the second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Australia opener Matthew Short showed some improvement. In the first match, he was dismissed off the very first ball by Taskin Ahmed. This time, he survived three deliveries before shouldering arms, only to see his stumps rattled by Taskin's in-dipper.
Mustafizur Rahman was even more lethal in the second over. Cooper Connolly edged the first ball of the over to Litton Das behind the stumps, and the embarrassment was complete when Matt Renshaw nicked the final delivery of the over, also off Mustafizur.
It was the first time Australia had lost three wickets in an ODI without scoring a run. Before this, there had been only three instances in ODI history of a team losing three wickets for no runs.
One of those came during the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, when Bangladesh lost three wickets in the first three balls against Sri Lanka and eventually slumped to 5 for 3.
Pakistan also suffered the same fate against South Africa in 1997. Earlier, in 1983, they lost three wickets for no runs against New Zealand in Birmingham.
