Zila parishad polls contradict constitution: BNP

Star Online Report

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said his party did not participate in the zila parishad elections as it contradicts with the country’s constitution.

The senior BNP leader also alleged that free, fair and credible election is not possible under the present government.

Fakhrul was talking to reporters after visiting ailing Shafiul Alam Prodhan, chairman of Jatiya Gonotantrik Party, a component of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, at Dhaka’s National Heart Foundation.

The Jagpa chief is undergoing treatment there since Monday after he suffered heart attack.

Lambasting the government for holding the election, he said electoral system has been destroyed through the election.

“As per the constitution, local body elections will be held through direct voting [of common people]. But the zila parishad election was held in an indirect manner,” he said.
