Rana’s bail plea rejected

Star Online Report

The High Court today rejected a bail petition filed by Tangail’s Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.

The HC also directed the trial court to finish the trial proceedings of the case in six months.

If the trial court cannot finish the trial proceedings in six months, the court will then consider the bail of Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, the HC said.

The bench of Justice Borhanuddin and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal delivered the verdict after holding hearing on the rule issued over the bail of Rana.

MP Rana cannot get release from jail following the HC order, Advocate Rusho Mustafa, a lawyer for Rana, told The Daily Star.

He said his client is yet to decide whether he will move an appeal before the appellate division of the Supreme Court against the High Court order.

The bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader of Tangail, was found on January 18, 2013. Later, a murder case was filed in connection with the incident.

Following a bail petition filed by Amanur, now in jail, the HC on April 13 this year granted ad-interim bail to Amanur and also issued a rule asking the government to explain why he should not be granted regular bail in this case.

Later, the government moved a petition before the Appellate Division of the SC for staying the HC order.

Following the government petition, the apex court on May 8 stayed the HC order of bail.

The SC on October 19 extended its earlier directive that stayed the HC order of bail and also asked the HC to hear and dispose of the rule, which was issued over granting bail to Amanur, in four weeks.

Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud, Advocate Nurul Islam Sujan and Advocate Rusho Mustafa appeared for Amanur, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam opposed the bail petition.
