SC upholds HC bail of suspended Sylhet city mayor Ariful
The Supreme Court today upheld an order of the High Court that granted bail to suspended Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case.
The five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order dismissing a petition filed by the government seeking a stay on Ariful’s HC bail.
The HC on Tuesday granted bail to Ariful because he has been in jail for around two years with the trial still going on, according to his lawyer Nizam Uddin.
Ariful, also a BNP leader, could not get released from jail, as he was arrested in another case, the lawyer said.
Then opposition lawmaker and Awami League leader Kibria and four others were killed in a grenade attack on a rally in Habiganj in January, 2005.
