President to decide on EC based on consensus: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today hoped that the president would take the decision to form a new election commission based on the consensus of political parties.

She was addressing a discussion at the auditorium of Kirshibid Institution Bangladesh in Dhaka this afternoon marking the country’s 46th Victory Day.

After being failed in movement and in the election, BNP has raised voice for the electoral process and is going to hold talks with the president, said Hasina.

“Why people will cast their votes in favour of BNP?” she said hoping that Awami League will come to power again with the verdict of the people.

“We remain faithful to the people. We have worked for people and they are the main strength of power,” Hasina said.

Citing the historical background of the country’s struggle for independence, Hasina said the countrymen have faced many adverse situations. At the same time, people have become victimised of conspiracy, she said.

“A local group of people has shaken their hands with the vested quarter to attain their interest,” she alleged.

Hasina also slammed BNP founder Ziaur Rahman for his role in the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and accused him [Zia] of grabbing the state power illegally.

“The word of democracy is indecorous in the voice of those who grabbed the state power illegally,” she said.

In his speech on March 7, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave all instructions to the people how they would carry out war and forge resistance against the occupation forces, she said.  But the history has been misinterpreted by a group of the vested quarter, she added.

She again expressed her determination to continue the trial of the crimes committed during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
