CU teacher Maidul gets 6-month bail in ICT case

Star Online Report

The High Court today granted ad interim bail to Chittagong University teacher Maidul Islam for six months in a case filed under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act on July 24.

The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mustafizur Rahman granted the bail after hearing a petition filed by Maidul Islam seeking bail in the case.

There is no legal bar for Maidul Islam to get released from the jail following the HC order, his lawyer Advocate Hasnat Qayyum told The Daily Star.

However, a court in Chittagram yesterday placed Maidul Islam on a three-day remand in the case.

University students, teachers demand Maidul’s release

Earlier in the day, masters graduates of Chittagong University's Sociology Department boycotted their farewell programme demanding the immediate and unconditional release of their teacher.

Meanwhile, over 50 teachers of Jahangirnagar University formed a human chain protesting Maidul’s remand order.

A Chattogram court on September 24 sent Maidul, an assistant professor of the university's sociology department, to jail in the case filed with Hathazari Police Station on July 24 on charge of defaming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media.

Md Iftekhar Uddin Ayaz, a former executive member of CU unit of BCL, filed the case.
