For the first time in many years, an election was held in Narayanganj with no contestant from the influential Osman family that dominated the local Awami League's politics for decades.

Salim Osman and his younger brother Shamim Osman are lawmakers from Jatiya Party and the AL.

The maiden election to the city corporation was held on October 30, 2011 when independent candidate Ivy was elected the country's first female city mayor defeating AL nominee Shamim Osman.

The city corporation is comprised of 27 wards under two upazilas-- Sadar and Bandar-- and four police stations -- Narayanganj, Bandar, Siddhirganj and Fatullah.
