Gun-toting BCL leaders get bail
Two former leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League who brandished guns during a hawkers’ eviction in Dhaka’s Gulistan area secured bail today.
Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Nurunnahar Yasmeen passed the order after their lawyer moved bail petitions for them in the case.
Md Sabbir Hossain and Md Ashiqur Rahman, former general secretaries of BCL Dhaka south and Wari thana units respectively, were sent to jail by another Dhaka court on surrender on Thursday.
Both of them were expelled from the BCL, the student front of the ruling Awami League, over brandishing firearms during the eviction drive at Gulistan on October 29.
On October 27, several Bangla dailies published photographs showing Sabbir and Ashiqur brandishing firearms during a clash between hawkers and an eviction team of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Shahbagh police sued the two in a case filed on October 31 in connection with the clash.
