Khaleda sits with 20-party leaders

A day after meeting with BNP senior policymakers, Khaleda Zia sat with the top leaders of her party-led 20-party alliance tonight to finalise its stance on the newly formed Election Commission (EC).

The meeting began at the BNP chief’s Gulshan office around 9:05 pm with Khaleda Zia in the chair, Sayrul Kabir Khan, Khaleda’s media wing member, told The Daily Star Online.

After the meeting, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is expected to give a formal reaction over the new EC on behalf of the alliances.

The meeting was continuing till 10:00 pm.

President Abdul Hamid appointed former secretary KM Nurul Huda chief election commissioner in line with a constitutional provision yesterday.

The president also appointed four election commissioners who include one woman for the first time. They are Mahbub Talukder, former additional secretary; Md Rafiqul Islam, ex-secretary; Begum Kabita Khanam, former district and sessions judge; and Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
