Osman went to the city’s Narayanganj Bar Academy polling station to cast his vote around 3:00pm. Many of his supporters and journalists were accompanying him.
After taking the ballot paper from the polling official, he openly cast vote for a mayoral candidate and showed his vote to journalists instead of using the secret room.
As per electoral rule, each voter must cast their vote secretly inside the secret room. Voting publicly is a punishable offense, said Returning Officer Nuruzzaman Talukder.
“As far I know, Shamim Osman showed his ballot paper to journalists before casting his vote, not after casting his vote. Showing blank ballot paper before casting vote is not any offense,” he told The Daily Star.
Asked about violation of rules, Shamim Osman told journalists, “You (journalists) could not find a fault with the polls. So, I bled myself to give you (journalists) something.”
“This year’s NCC poll is the proof that election during Hasina’s rule is always fair,” he told reporters after casting his vote.
