Fakhrul calls for talks on Khaleda’s proposals

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called upon the government for talks on forming an acceptable Election Commission based on Khaleda Zia’s proposals.

“Government should take our Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s proposal positively. It has paved the path for talks,” Fakhrul said while talking at a programme in Dhaka this afternoon.

Bangladesh’s political scenario is already abuzz with the formation of a fresh election commission, which will oversee the next general elections, with the current commission’s tenure nearing an end.

Last Friday, Khaleda Zia proposed a set of recommendations to the formation of a new Election Commission (EC) in consensus with all the political parties involved.

Her proposals included changes to the Representation of the People’s Order (RPO) to strengthen the EC and formation of a “search committee” to select the next election commissioners.

Ruling Awami League, however, has rejected Khaleda Zia’s proposals.

Fakhrul also asked the government to shun pride and accept the demand of the people for a democratic atmosphere.

“The countrymen want relief from the political repression, oppression and misdeeds of the government,” he added. “Otherwise, consequences for the misdeeds will not bring good to anyone.”

“Khaleda Zia has presented her proposals to bring back peace and stability in the country but the government has rejected it deliberately,” he said.

“Awami League will not come to power if a free and fair election is held in the country,” Fakhrul said.
