Ershad for law to form acceptable EC

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad today underscored the need for formulating a law to constitute a neutral and acceptable election commission.

“There is no specific law to form a neutral and acceptable election commission. Thus, we have to depend on the president. Formulation of a law is essential now and we will talk to the president in this regard,” Ershad said.

Ershad, also special envoy to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was addressing a function at Rangpur circuit house this noon.

The former autocratic ruler also observed that several sorts of problems arise after formation of the election commission by the president due to the absence of law in this regard.

He said President Abdul Hamid has taken an initiative to hold dialogue with political parties to reach a consensus to form a new election commission as the tenure of the incumbent EC expires in February next year.

“Taking part in the dialogue, we will submit a proposal to form an independent and neutral election commission. We hope that the president would take a bold decision,” he added.

The Jatiya Party is scheduled to meet the head of state on December 20.
