A Chittagong court today sent BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury to jail after law enforcers showed him arrested in eight cases filed for loan default.

Judge Abdul Kader of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court passed the order when Aslam was produced before the court, Nirmolendu Chakrabarti, assistant deputy commissioner of the district, told The Daily Star.

Aslam took Tk 36.80 crore as loan from the CDA branch of Pubali Bank Ltd in the port city on different terms between the years of 2013 and 2015, the police official said.

Eight separate cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station after the cheques he submitted to the bank to repay the loan had been dishonored, the ADC said.

Law enforcers picked Aslam from Dhaka's Khilkhet area on May 15 after he drew controversy over a meeting with an Israeli political leader in India last month.

On May 24, Aslam was also shown arrested in two arson cases.

After two days, Aslam was sued in a sedition case on charge of hatching a conspiracy with Israel's Likud Party and its intelligence agency Mossad to oust the government.
