BNP won’t join farcical polls in fear: Mahbub

BNP Vice Chairman Khandakar Mahbub Hossain today said that his party will not take part in any stage-managed election in fear of cancellation of its registration as a political party.

“The government is going to set up a trap by arranging a farcical national election but we will not fall into the very trap in fear of losing registration,” Mahbub said.

He was addressing a programme protesting the recent gas price hike at Photo Journalist Association in Dhaka.

Referring to the January 5, 2014’s “farcical election”, he said no such election will allow to be held on the soil of the country.

“We must form a resistance by any means if such farcical polls take place again in the country,” he warned.

Reiterating his party’s demand for holding of the next general election under a neutral government, Mahbub said the election will not be fair and credible if it is held under the supervision of Sheikh Hasina-led election-time government.

Talking about the Election Commission, he said the EC will be turned into a hapless commission in discharging its duties in line with the order of the ruling quarter no matter how much powerful it is.

Terming the government as “anti-people”, Mahbub, also a prominent lawyer, said a neutral supportive election-time government will have to be established for the sake of a credible and transparent election.

“I believe that people will be reorganised under the leadership of Khaleda Zia and will wage a tougher movement against the government to meet our demands,” he said.
