AL, BNP hand proposals of likely commissioners

Ruling Awami League and their political archrival BNP today recommended five names each for potential election commissioners in the queue to reforming the Election Commission.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizivi and BNP chairperson’s personal secretary ABM Abdus Sattar handed the proposal in a letter around noon, Rizvi told The Daily Star.

Awami League’s Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap handed over his party’s recommendations around noon, party insiders said.

Abdul Wadud, additional secretary of the cabinet division, accepted both proposals.

Islami Oikkya Jote’s Assistant Secretary General Afzal Hossain submitted five names via an e-mail to an additional secretary of the cabinet last night, party’s Chairman Abdul Latif Mizan said.

Among the proposed names are three former secretaries, one Islamic cleric and a retired army officer, a top leader of the party told The Daily Star.

Also, Khelafat Mojlish, National Awami Party (Muzaffar), Jamiad-E-Ulama-E-Islam, Bangladesh Islami Front, Jatiyo Shomajtantrik Dal (Inu), a component in the Awami-led ruling party alliance, and BJP submitted their proposals to the cabinet division
