BNP to hold countrywide demo Wednesday
BNP today announced another countrywide demonstration for Wednesday in protest against the conviction of the party’s Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case.
According to the schedule, the demonstration will be held at all divisional, district and upazila level headquarters simultaneously, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed made the announcement at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka.
Earlier on Saturday, the party observed a similar programme on the same issue.
Terming the money laundering case as outcome of the government’s politics of vengeance, Rizvi said the government is heading with a plan to keep Khaleda Zia and her elder son Tarique Rahman away from politics.
The nationalist force will raise their voices protesting the government’s misdeeds, mismanagements and falsehood and they will not bow down their heads in any circumstance, he said.
On Thursday, the High Court sentenced Tarique Rahman to seven years' imprisonment and fined Tk 20 crore, scrapping his acquittal in the money-laundering case.
On November 17, 2013, a Dhaka court acquitted Tarique while sentenced his friend and business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun to seven years along with fine of Tk 40 crore in the ACC case filed for illegally sending Tk 20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.
