Bangladesh Chhatra League, pro-Awami League student body, today demanded existence of active student politics on all campuses of country’s private universities.

BCL President Saifur Rahman Sohag and General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain made the demand at a discussion at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh premises at Farmgate.

The government organised the programme with the authorities of private universities in the backdrop of finding involvement of private university students in militancy following Dhaka and Sholakia Eidgah attacks.

Sohag alleged that madrassah and private universities are not free of politics, but there exists a “silent” politics.

“Where there remains a silent politics, there grows militancy and terrorism,” Sohag said, adding that private universities must have “active” student politics.

Jakir said: “The authorities of private universities cannot deny the responsibilities for killings in the name of Islam.”

“Students, therefore, demand inclusion of active student politics in all private universities. They can, in no way, accept that students enroll universities with the bond of not involving in politics,” he added.

Earlier, BCL announced forming committees at all private universities as a part of its greater goal to fight militancy in the country.

Speaking at a meeting on creating awareness against militancy in the capital on Friday, Sohag claimed that militancy is growing in the campuses where there are no activities of the BCL.

BCL leaders also observed that all the private universities should not be held responsible for militant activities of a few students. There are also problems of extremist ideologies among the students of public universities, they added.
