Former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain today called upon the people to forge a national unity to ensure people’s democratic rights in light of the spirit of independence.

“We believe that the countrymen would forge a national unity to bring meaningful change in the state and social system,” they said in a joint statement this evening.

Citing instances of mass movements waged from 1952 to 1990, they said that the people gained victory in 1971 with their united efforts.

“We think the same unity will have to be formed to hold the next general election in a free, fair and inclusive manner,” they said in the statement.

Terming people’s unity as “super power” they said, “We have seen many bowing down heads before the unity. And it is the appropriate time for people to forge such unity to build an alternative non-violent political platform,” they said.

The like-minded political parties and people from all walks of life would form a large alternative political platform responding to their call before holding of the next general election, they hoped.
