Attack on Hindus: AL suspends 3 local leaders

Ruling Awami League today suspended three of its local leaders over their involvement in the attack on Hindu community in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar.

They are: Nasirnagar Union Parishad Chairman Abul Hashem, also assistant secretary of AL’s upazila unit, Faruk Mia, president of Haripur union, and Haji Suruj, chief of Chapartola union unit.

The ruling party’s Brahmanbaria district unit President RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury confirmed the order of suspension of the trio to The Daily Star this evening.

Also, the Awami League formed a five-member probe team, led by district unit Vice President Helal Uddin, to identify if any more of the party’s men were involved in the rampage.

Last Sunday, Zealots attacked the Hindu community of Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar upazila and vandalised and ransacked at least five temples and over 100 houses over a Facebook post.

National human rights body and minority community leaders have said the attack was deliberate and aimed to drive away Hindus from their land – for land occupation.

Until now, two cases have been filed in this regard. Several people were detained and some of them shown arrested.
