32 shown arrested over Dhaka College BCL infighting

Thirty-two Bangladesh Chhatra League men were shown arrested in two separate cases filed over the yesterday’s factional clash at Dhaka College.

The arrestees including the college unit BCL convener Noor Alam Bhuiyan were sent to jail this evening after police sent them to a Dhaka court this afternoon, said Md Atiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station.

The court is expected to hold hearing of the cases tomorrow, court sources said.

Shahjalal, a follower of a faction led by Noor, filed a case against 12 identified and 80 unidentified people with the police station following the clash.

Meanwhile, Gopal Das, who is loyal to another faction led by joint convener Hiron Bhuiyan, filed a counter case against 20 named, including Noor, and 60 unnamed people with the same police station.

Police last night picked up the 32 BCL men and showed them arrested in the two cases today, the OC said.

At least 20 shots were fired when two factions of BCL’s Dhaka College unit locked in a clash over establishing supremacy on campus yesterday evening.

Three students were injured and there were chases and counter chases between the feuding groups, witnesses said, adding that seven motorbikes were torched.

19 BCL men suspended

BCL suspended 19 of its leaders and activists following the factional clash that left three injured.

BCL central committee came up with the organisational step at an emergency meeting, according to its press release issued this afternoon.
