One killed, 24 injured in Faridpur clash

A man was killed and at least 24 others injured as two groups of villagers locked into a clash at Bhanga upazila in Faridpur today.

The deceased was identified as Shahid Matubbar, 36, son of late Joynal Matubbar of Luxmipur village under the upazila, our local correspondent reports quoting Shafikur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhanga Police Station.

There had been a longstanding conflict between Shahajahan Matubbar and Osman Goni, according to locals.

Three to four supporters left Shahajahan's group and joined Osman's group last night. Following this, members from both factions, equipped with lethal weapons, locked into a clash around 8:30am that left 25 people injured.

Shahid Matubbar, a supporter of Shahajahan group, died on the way to Faridpur General Hospital around 10:00am, the OC said.

The injured were admitted to Faridpur General Hospital, Bhanga and Sadarpur upazila health complexes, the police official said.

There is an allegation that around 16 houses in the village were vandalized and looted during the clash, the OC said.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control and additional forces were deployed in the area to avert further untoward incident, he said.
