UNESCO sanctions $3 lakh to help eradicate illiteracy

HAMBURG (Germany), July 15: UNESCO Director General Federico Mayor called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her hotel suite here last night, reports BSS. During the discussion, Mayor assured the Prime Minister of all kinds of cooperation from UNESCO and other international agencies to implement Bangladesh government's pledge to eradicate illiteracy within the next ten years. He also sanctioned a special grant of three lakh US dollars to assist Bangladesh efforts in this regard. Highlighting the programmes and policies in education sector, the Prime Minister said her government considers spread of education as the main tool for national development. Besides highest allocation made in the national budget for education sector, her government had mobilised all resources and might for removing illiteracy within the stipulated time, she said.
