Jamaat MP seeks govt explanation over third LNG terminal deal

Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Muhammad Nazibur Rahman (Pabna-1) today raised allegations of corruption, favouritism and irregularities in the proposed third LNG terminal deal and sought a statement from the government on the issue.

Speaking on a point of order in parliament, Nazibur referred to a report published by The Daily Star today concerning the proposed floating LNG terminal.

“Speaker, a few days ago, during a discussion on the energy crisis, I spoke about corruption, favouritism and irregularities involving the third LNG terminal that is being prepared. Today, The Daily Star published a report on the issue,” he said.

Nazibur said, “According to the report, another company had given a quotation of $190,000 for the same LNG facility. But the contract was given to another party for $342,000. There is also an issue of financial involvement of a member of the ruling party in this.”

“I will finish the question from that day in just half a minute. On that day, the Honourable State Minister for Energy avoided the question. I expect a statement on this issue from the government’s state minister or minister, or the persons concerned,” he said.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad then ruled that none of the three points of order raised at the time qualified as a point of order.

“Members, no more, please. Honourable members, I have heard these three points of order. Unfortunately, not a single one of them was accepted as a point of order,” the Speaker said.

Nazibur’s submission was therefore not accepted as a point of order.
