Leaders of the ruling Awami League and its alliance have expressed satisfaction over the nomination of Md Shahabuddin as the next president of the country while the BNP termed the election process “illegal”.

The BNP will organise road marches in all divisional cities on February 18 to press home its 10 demands that include holding the next national election under a non-partisan caretaker government.

The BCL revealed the matter through a press release signed by BCL President Saddam Hussain and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain formally inaugurated the programme at Shyamoli Club Ground.

Shahabuddin started his career in judicial service in 1983 and was a district judge till 2006. He also discharged duties as chairman of labour court in 2006, lawyer of the Supreme Court from 2008 to 2011 and ACC commissioner from March 2011 to March 2016.

An AL delegation, led by the party's General Secretary Obaidul Quader, submitted the nomination papers at the Election Commission this morning.

The clash took place while the BNP was holding demonstrations as part of the party's central programme and the AL was holding its peace rally.
