After the first-ever Jagannath University Central Students' Union election (JnUCSU), the newly-elected representatives are yet to receive a designated office space or the basic infrastructure needed to begin their activities.

University sources said a room at the Obokash Bhaban has been allocated for JnUCSU representatives, but it is not yet ready for use. As a result, uncertainty has emerged over when the elected body will be able to formally start functioning after assuming office.

In addition, the absence of a specific budget allocation for JnUCSU has raised concerns among stakeholders that organisational activities may remain stalled.

Speaking to The Daily Star, newly elected Vice-President Riazul Islam said JnUCSU is not merely an electoral exercise but an important platform for student representation. "If seating arrangements and other basic facilities are not ensured even after the election, it will be difficult to meet students' expectations," he added.

General Secretary Abdul Alim Arif said the representatives are mentally prepared to take responsibility, but the working environment has not yet been created. "An effective office, necessary manpower, and a designated budget must be ensured as soon as possible," he added.

JnU Election Commissioner Prof Kaniz Fatema Kakolee said the commission's responsibility was limited to conducting the election, which it completed smoothly. "Where the elected representatives will sit and how the union will operate will be decided by the JnUCSU president and the vice-chancellor," she said.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Rezaul Karim said JnUCSU is a new experience for the university. "Work is underway to quickly prepare the designated room at the Obokash Bhaban. Discussions are also ongoing with the relevant offices regarding budget and other administrative matters," he added.

After years of demands, Jagannath University held its first-ever JnUCSU election on January 6. In the election, Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel Odommo Jobian Oikya won 16 of the 21 central union posts, including VP, GS, and AGS. In the hall unions, Bangladesh Chhatri Sangstha secured victory in 11 of the 13 posts, including VP, GS, and AGS.
