Unknown miscreants allegedly hurled bricks at the vehicle of Muhammad Wahed Murad, the Islamic Front Bangladesh candidate backed by the Greater Sunni Alliance from Chattogram-9, on the first day of election campaigning yesterday.

The incident took place around 12:30pm in the Subarea-Didar Market area, Wahed Murad said. While the front windscreen of his SUV was damaged in the attack, no injuries were reported.

Aftab Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said the police are investigating the matter.

Speaking at a press conference at a restaurant in the city’s Jamalkhan area, Murad said he went to the residence of Kazi Mainuddin Ashrafi, chairman of Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jama’at Bangladesh, to seek blessings.

“On the way, some unidentified persons hurled bricks at my moving vehicle. I was seated in the front. The car was damaged, but I did not get out,” he said.

He said he immediately informed the administration and police.

Asked who might be behind the attack, Murad said he believed political rivals fearful of his electoral prospects could be responsible.
