Two killed in separate incidents in Pabna
A man was shot dead and a college student was stabbed to death in separate incidents in Pabna town yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Hossain Ali, 55, of Jafrabad village in Pabna Sadar upazila, and Monirul Islam, 22, a college student from Shibrampur Paschimpara village in Santhia upazila, said Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pabna Sadar Police Station.
Quoting locals, the OC said Hossain had come to Pabna Jamia Ashrafia Madrasa in the district town to admit his son.
When he reached the madrasa area around 7:30pm, several assailants opened fire on him in front of his son, leaving him dead on the spot, the OC said, adding that a case has been filed against one named accused and three to four unidentified individuals.
Police have yet to determine the motive behind the killing. However, they have learned that the deceased allegedly had links to outlawed groups, the OC added.
In a separate incident, Monirul was stabbed behind the Pabna Central Bus Terminal at around 4:30pm following an altercation.
The OC said an argument broke out between Monirul and another youth, identified as Rakib. At one stage of the altercation, Rakib allegedly stabbed Monirul with a sharp weapon.
Rakib jumped into a nearby pond in an attempt to escape but was detained by police at the scene, he added.
Locals rescued Monirul and took him to Pabna General Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, but died on the way.
Police recovered both bodies and sent them to the morgue at Pabna General Hospital for autopsies today, the OC said.
