Police have arrested two individuals, including a local Jubo Dal leader, in connection with the killing of Swechchhasebak Dal leader Billal Hossain Talukdar, who was stabbed to death during an arbitration meeting in Dhaka’s Mouchak area last night.
The arrestees were identified as Al Amin, convener of Ward No 19 Jubo Dal, and Riaz.
Confirming the development, Sheikh Jahidul Islam, deputy commissioner (Ramna Division) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star that Al Amin was arrested in Dhaka, while the other was detained in Munshiganj.
Billal, 57, a former convener of Ramna thana Swechchhasebak Dal, was attacked around 8:00pm in front of Anarkali Market in Mouchak and later died from his injuries.
According to the deceased's nephew, Md Mobarak Hossain Akash, an arbitration meeting was arranged after he was assaulted by several individuals near Anarkali Market earlier in the evening.
During the meeting, Billal became involved in an argument with Didarul Islam Babu, convener of Ramna thana Jubo Dal, and Lutfor, the unit's secretary, Akash alleged. At one stage, Billal was stabbed in the chest by Babu's followers, allegedly acting under his directions.
Following the incident, Jubo Dal expelled Babu and dissolved its Ramna thana committee, according to a press release issued by the BNP's youth wing.
