Road march will go on until the govt resigns
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the youth road march will continue until the government steps down.
He was speaking at a rally in front of the party office at Rangpur city's Grand Hotel intersection yesterday morning before the start of a road march to Dinajpur.
Three pro-BNP bodies -- Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal -- organised the programme to press home the party's one-point demand -- resignation of the government and general elections under a non-party interim government.
Fakhrul demanded parliamentary polls under a neutral interim government after the reformation of the Election Commission.
"People don't want to see any more elections like those of 2014 and 2018."
Accusing the Awami League of committing electoral irregularities, he said not only BNP but also the other political parties have said that no fair election is possible under the incumbent government.
The BNP secretary general stressed the need for an independent and impartial EC to ensure the voting rights of the people.
He urged the people not to return home until their demand is met.
Talking about the treatment of ailing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul said, "I visited Khaleda Zia Friday night. Her health is not well. She needs urgent treatment abroad."
He said though AL leaders have been going abroad for treatment time and again, the government is not allowing Khaleda to travel abroad for advanced treatment.
The BNP leader expressed concern over harassing party acting chairperson Tarique Rahman by brining false allegations against him.
The 80km road march, led by Fakhrul, ended in Dinajpur truck terminal area after the road march reached there around 5:00pm.
On the way to Dinajpur, the convoy of the three organisations stopped in Saidpur bus terminal area where Fakhrul briefly addressed a rally.
Hundreds of people from the northern districts attended the road march.
